ART ATTACK

Zawsze zafascynowana byłam analizą pojęcia prawdy. Zarówno w życiu prywatnym jak i zawodowym stale analizuję granice między subiektywnym, a obiektywnym; indywidualnym, a kolektywnym; iluzją, a rzeczywistością. HISTORY IS HER STORY TOO to fragment kontynuowanego przez 9 lat, z partnerem artystycznym i życiowym, Thomasem Dellacroix cyklu SELF-PORTRAITS OF OTHERS. Tematami naszych wcieleniowych autoportretów, zaliczanych do nurtu „appropriation art” były wizerunek, tożsamość i oryginalność, w kontekście mas mediów i pamięci kolektywnej. Naszym celem było balansowanie na cienkiej granicy między rzeczywistością a iluzją, która w przypadku osób znanych jest granicą pomiędzy prawdą o nich, a wizerunkiem jaki, czasem wbrew ich woli, powstał w popkulturze. Badaliśmy w ten sposób relację między społeczeństwem a wizerunkiem.

SELF-PORTRAITS OF OTHERS ma również wymiar relacyjny. To zapis naszego związku, którego początkiem był właśnie ten projekt. Ale to też zapis czasów i miejsc, w których powstały nasze zdjęcia (Londyn, Barcelona, Sztokholm i Paryż), zwłaszcza, że są to fotografie autokreacyjne. Jesteśmy w nich reżyserami, aktorami, charakteryzatorami, kostiumografami, wreszcie artystami i archiwistami. Jednak przede wszystkim jesteśmy w nim kobietą i mężczyzną, partnerami, małżonkami. Ten ostatni aspekt pokazuje nasz projekt jako wspólną, dziewięcioletnią podróż w labiryncie kobiecych i męskich archetypów, w których przeglądaliśmy się jak w gabinecie luster.

Ciekawym aspektem projektu, który widzę wyraźnie dopiero z perspektywy lat, jest moja osobista motywacja. Wcielanie się w postaci sławnych kobiet i eksplorowanie archetypów społecznych stało się nie tylko moim sposobem na zaistnienie w nowym wielkim świecie Zachodu, ale także konstruowaniem osobistego mitu, a z czasem, co najistotniejsze, sposobem na kwestionowanie przyjętych kodeksów reprezentacji i tożsamości.

ART ATTACK

I’ve always had a fascination for the psychological aspects of life. Both in my private and professional life I constantly analyze the border between subjective and objective, individual and collective, illusion and reality. ART ATTACK is a part of the SELF-PORTRAITS OF OTHERS series, which I’ve been continuing for 9 years together with my long-time artistic and life partner, Thomas Dellacroix. The themes of these self-portraits, belonging to the "appropriation art", were image, identity and originality, in the context of mass media and collective memory. Our goal was to balance on the thin boarder between reality and illusion, which in the case of famous people is the line between the truth about them and the image that, sometimes against their will, exits in pop culture. In this way, we examined the relationship between society and image.

SELF-PORTRAITS OF OTHERS has also a relationship dimension, as it is a record of our relationship, which began with this project. But it is also a record of the times and places where our photos were taken (London, Barcelona, Stockholm and Paris), especially since they are self-created photographs. We were both directors, actors, make-up artists, costume designers, and finally artists and archivists. But above all, we are a woman and a man, partners, spouses. This last aspect shows our project as a nine-year journey in the labyrinth of male and female archetypes in which we reflected different parts of ourselves like in the funhause mirror.

An interesting aspect of the project, which I see clearly only after many years, is my personal motivation. Taking on the role of famous women and exploring social archetypes became not only my way of making my place in the great new world of the West, but also the construction of a personal myth, and over time, most importantly, a way of questioning the accepted codes of representation and identity.
